Social Events are organised by members of the
Management Committee. Suggestions are always welcome as well as bands or
groups that would appeal to members. The regular events include:
Burns Night
The club celebrates its
Scottish connections (though these are shrouded in mystery and the mists of
time) with a traditional Burns Night complete with piper and haggis. There
is usually a complementary scotch to start with followed by the traditional
menu with vegetarian alternatives. There is the usual rendition of the ode
to the haggis at the start of the evening, with less traditional renditions
of anything vaguely Scottish at the end. This is one of the several black
tie events that the club does so well.
Fitting Out Supper
In recent years this event
ha returned to its original casual low-key format with a two-course supper
type meal and a sing-along entertainment.
The Club Regatta
This event is hugely
enjoyed by all categories of membership and there is always a good turnout.
Sailing takes place on Saturday and Sunday – with a live band on Saturday
night – a meal is available and the Rear Commodore sailing traditionally
hosts the event.
Trafalgar Night
Like most sailing clubs we
celebrate the famous victory with a formal dinner (black tie, full menu,
port and Madeira). A guest speaker usually from her Majesty’s Navy reminds
us of our proud history, but now that we are all European the jingoism is
toned down (we even sometimes drink French wine!).
Laying – Up Supper
The Laying Up Supper
traditionally marks the end of the sailing season, though recently the
season has extended right up to Christmas. This is another formal affair
with black tie or lounge suits, which is particularly popular with the
sailors as the season’s results are announced and prizes awarded. The Rear
Commodore Sailing hosts the event and gives a round up of the sailing season
and the dinner is followed by a disco.
Christmas Supper –Dance
This event is generally held on the first Saturday
of December and comprises a live band and supper.
Christmas Carols
The Lee on the Solent Sailing Club choir (i.e.
everyone) and band entertain the residents at the old people’s home before
returning to the club for an enthusiastic rendition of all the popular
carols. This is the beginning of the Xmas season for many members and is a
very popular event. There are also delicious seasonal nibbles on offer, and
most members have perfected the art of simultaneously singing, drinking and
nibbling without accident or danger to others.
Commodore’s Punch
Party
On Christmas morning the Commodore uses a punch
recipe passed down from generation to generation to get the festivities off
to a raucous start. It is a pleasure not to be missed, and may be the only
time the Commodore gives you a drink! There is always heated debate about
the quality of the punch, but it always goes before members move on to the
regular bar drinks. The punch party is followed by Christmas lunch for those
avoiding the family or the oven. This is another popular event, so it is
essential to book early.
Other social events are
organised throughout the year and these are advertised on the Club Notice
