The Club is
fortunate in having a large impressive Snooker Room on the ground floor of
the Main Clubhouse. This room is fully equipped and has two full sized
snooker tables that are professionally serviced and kept maintained in a
first class condition. It is quite unique for a small Sailing Club to have
such a well-appointed Snooker Room and we are the only Sailing Club within
the immediate area to have such a facility. It is extensively used all the
year around by all categories of Club members.
The following
snooker tournaments are held during the winter months.
This is a
sudden death one frame ‘Knockout Competition’ held in late October and is a
very good opener for the winter season. The aim is to complete this
competition in one evening.
ALAN BALLARD TROPHY
This is a best
of 3 frames ’Open Knockout Competition’ which is held during the months of
December and January. The results of this competition are used as a guide
for the handicaps in the Mitchell Cup which follows on immediately
afterwards.
This
is the main snooker event of the season, starting in February and continuing
on into May. It is a best of 3 frames ‘Handicap Knockout Competition’. Those
unfortunate enough to be knocked out in the first round are automatically
entered into the Little Cup.
Entry to the
above tournaments is open to all Club Members, ladies are particularly
invited and handicaps are guaranteed to be generous for the Mitchell Cup. A
small entry charge of not more than £3 is made for each of the above
competitions to cover the cost of prizes.
In addition to
the above annual tournaments a Winter Snooker League is run starting in
November and continuing through to February. The other teams taking part are
Fareham, Hill Head and Seafarers Sailing Clubs. None of these clubs have
snooker facilities so all the matches are played at Lee. The league
programme consists of 12 matches, 6 before and 6 after Christmas, played on
Wednesday evenings throughout the season. Eight players per team are
required for each match to play eight doubles frames. The Winter League
season finishes on or about the 3rd Wednesday in February with a
Captain’s Night, when the Captains pick two pairs from their teams to play
all the other clubs, in a fun one-night knockout.
The basic Club
rules that apply for the use of the Snooker Room and the tables are quite
simple. The official Governing rules for both the games of Snooker and
Billiards also apply and copies of these are posted in the Snooker Room.
The Tables are
available for play during normal bar opening hours. Play during other times
can be made by prior arrangement, normally with the bar staff.
The Snooker
tables are available for the use of all adult club members. Children under
the age of 14 are not allowed to play on the tables. Cadet Members between
the ages of 14 to 17 may only play on the tables when accompanied by an
adult Club member.

No eating of
food (including crisps, nuts etc) is allowed in the Snooker Room. The only
exception to this rule is when the tables are especially covered for
official social functions and the room is closed for snooker.
No smoking or
drinking is allowed over the tables.
The light
meters must always be on when play is in progress on the tables.
Players are
expected to give up their table to other waiting members when the table
lights next go out. Waiting members will normally put their names up on
the ‘Waiting Board’ at the near end of the Snooker Room.
Finally
All Club
Members are expected to take the utmost care of the tables, the cloths and
all the auxiliary equipment at all times. This includes covering the tables,
with the covers provided, at the end of play.
Both tables
are equipped with light meters that will only accept TOKENS. The meters are
programmed to accept only one token at a time and each token will give 50
minutes duration of lights. Tokens may be purchased from the bar at a cost
of £1.60 each.
