The club operates club racing on Tuesday evenings, Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Races are organised into series with races over a number of days. Each race normally has four starts grouping boats of similar abilities using the Portsmouth yardstick system.

Races are normally organised in four starts. Dinghy classes regularly raced include:

Laser, Topper, RS400, RS800, RS Vareo, 29er, 49er, Wayfarer, Albacore, Comet, GP14, Laser 3000, Laser II, Laser 2000, Flying Dutchman, Merlin, Mirror and others.

LOSSC runs an annual championship for racing members.

The Racing Rules of Sailing 2005-2008

The racing rules are revised and published every four years by the International Sailing Federation, the international authority for the sport.

 

Portsmouth Yardstick Scheme

 

General

A minimum of 3 races constitutes a series.  A race with only one starter

will be valid.

 

Discards - Will apply at the following rate:

4/14,  4/13,  3/12,  3/11,  3/10,  3/9,  2/8,  2/7,  2/6,  1/5,  1/4,  1 /3.

 

Starts - All Tuesday and Saturday Series

Class 1            Published time

Class 2            Published time + 3 minutes

Class 3            Published time + 6 minutes

Class 4            Published time + 9 minutes

 

Short Course Series

Each day has 2 x 35 minute (nominal) average lap time races back to back with all-in starts.

 

Pursuit Races

t is assumed that the GP14s will be the slowest class. Alternative races may be provided for slower boats. The Timtura Pursuit will finish at Wootton Creek and the Battery Pursuit will finish at the Battery Inn (between Ryde and Seaview).

 

The Turk Trophy

Two handicap races with Stokes Bay, Hardway and the Navy.
