Brass Monkeys and Dogs off Chains

The first day of the sailing season. The hazy sun created a spring-like feel and there was much bimbling in the boatyard as masts were stepped, sails checked, halyards hoisted and foils faired. The permanent buoys were fixed (thanks Andy and Ciaran), a sausage course was laid and we were ready for off. But the weather was deceptive. Even on shore there were vicious gusts whipping through the compound. At sea the swell was building and there were ominous dark patches on the water – so ominous, in fact, that only six boats made it to the start line. It was real dogs off chains wind......
